CHAPTER 10

Above All, Get Wisdom

Until I started writing how downsizing applies to all the principles of Design Smarts, it hadn’t occurred to me to connect the MINDSET principle to downsizing having less or fewer toxic thoughts. This was a “duh, Mitzi” revelation! My huge aha moment came as realized it was not enough for me to stop negative thinking but to downsize or eliminate them as they were exponentially multiplying in my O50 brain specifically attached to editing this book. This was a revelation to me. I needed to downsize my thoughts because with different times or different circumstances different thoughts enter our MINDSETS. I had already learned how our negative thoughts can potentially sabotage everything in our lives including our wellness, our relationships, our careers, and definitely our futures.

Now I know much more that I would like to share for your benefit as you enter new stages of life as an O50. Each stage of life comes with the obvious challenges since we have never experienced the positives and the negatives as we move through each life stage. There will be tons of new and different circumstances and the mind can work overtime if it is not downsized. Let me give you a very recent personal example.

It was a very cold morning and at 5:30 AM, prior to even getting out of bed to turn the heat up, before I put my feet on the floor, these thoughts came bombarding into my mind. I’m not going to make my writing deadline! There is too much to do and not enough time to do it. I know I am going to mess up this one and my only opportunity for signing books at the upcoming conferences. I am not possibly gifted enough to think that I could write a book. I am going to disappoint so many people who are counting on me to finish.

Mind you, even after all that I have learned, and put into practice, about mindsets, brain theory, and the power of our thoughts, these negative MINDSETS were my exact thoughts. How very easy it was for me to mentally crash into doubt, negativity, angst, discouragement, anxiety, and even fear. I allowed, or permitted, my deadline time pressures, coupled with the overwhelming fatigue from traveling the previous day, to control my mindset. These out of control thoughts distorted my thinking to a MINDSET that my day ahead would be one of doom and gloom. I felt a crushing fatigue and, along with a sour facial expression, my words made it worse. I told Bob how impossible my day was going to be, how little sleep I had, and on and on went my litany of self-pity. Can you relate?
